Reflection
I was very excited to have officially started my practicum with Randall! I was in Randall’s class three years ago when I came to Vancouver for a one-month exchange program. I never forgot how engaging and helpful his classes were, so the moment I chose this practicum course, I have set my mind on asking him to be my sponsor teacher. Luckily, we bonded well after not keeping in touch for three years and Randall agreed on helping me with my study!
I have to say I was a bit nervous in the very first class as the students were entering the classroom. They seem nice, of course, but there were not a lot of smiles, just very polite and somewhat timid greetings. I understand that in some Asian cultures, it is not proper to act all hearty when they first meet a bunch of new people, but somehow, I was hoping the class vibe would be more friendly and warm. Nevertheless, Randall managed to melt down everyone’s armor and started to ask them simple questions like “How are you feeling? Sleepy? Excited?” to get everyone talking as a warm-up. Randall then invited me to go on stage for a short self-introduction. Seeing everyone showing their smiles slowly, I let down my guard as well and had a cheery self-intro. The students seemed to have enjoyed my presence throughout the class as I walked around to help them with their tasks, and I enjoyed every second of my first observation.
