Relfection
After some experience of teaching and handout designing, I realzied that the clearer you design the worksheets, the easier the class will be for you. Hence, for this class, I put all the insturctions on the slides and break the video into short clips so I don't have to stop and start by myself. The result was great. I could focus on observing the students' reaction and make adjustments, I could be more at ease at explaning new words, and I could manage my time a lot better. I enjoyed having my class with the help of powerpoints but not just smply using paper-based materials. These visual aids promote students' concentration on the materials and I find it encouraging for their class participation.
So far, I have also tried some online surveys and activities like Kahoot and Menti. I find them perfect tools for young adults or whoever are digitally literated to take part in. Students find it fun and it is easy for teachers to use. More importantly, they boosts students' motivation to participate in class and they simply make the class more fun!
One challenge I had when desinging this course was the selection of the video. There are thousands of videos on the same topic, yet the good ones or the ones that are suitable for your students are very limited. I spent nearly 30 minutes tyring to find the perfect video for my class, and here some things that you have to consider when choosing your video:
length (and/or how you should devide them into shorter clips)
speaking rate
accent
content (are there any sensitive topics in the video? are all the contents what you will be teaching in class? if not, what topics should you pick to discuss in class and how are you going to address the issues that you're not going to discuss?)
vocabulary (I would pick out the vocabulary that are at their level and/or are crucial for understanding the content. You can also put down the harder words on the worksheet and translate them into the students' native language if possible. However, there should not be too many hard words in the video.)
I also taught them some useful colors that are not commonly tuaght in class settings, because I want my class to be as authentic as possible. To me, English should be a tool, like a key that can open doors and windows so you can walk in different worlds or see different views. By teaching my students these English words that they could actually use in real life, for example, when shopping for clothes whether online or at physical stores, they could not only practice what they've learned but also expreince a painless shopping journey.
